Botanical Parts of Black Pepper

Black pepper is a flowering plant that is cultivated for its fruit. It is dried and then used for medicinal purposes. Black pepper plants are grown in tropical areas, the leaves and seeds of these plants have essential oil that produces a strong fragrance.

The pepper plant is a perennial woody vine that grows up to 4 m in height with a support system like trees or poles. Usually, they won’t grow in too dry soil, flooding, moist, well-drained, and organic-rich soil. Apart from soil conditions, this plant does not have the ability to produce a good yield at an altitude of 900 m above sea level. The propagation process of this plant can be done by the stem cuttings of the plant about 40 cm and then leave it to climb over the trees or climbing frames.

--> Leaves
The leaves of pepper plants are alternate, petiolate, simple, and oval in shape. The size of the leaves is 2.0 to 3.9 inches in length and 1.2 to 2.4 inches in cross. The color of the upper region is dark green while the bottom is whitish-green.

--> Flowers
Flowers are greenish-yellow in color and are arranged in spiral form. The flower spike gets out from the main stem node and the mature spike is about the size of 2.8 to 5.9 in.

--> Fruits
The size of the fruit is from 4mm to 6mm. Initially, the color of the fruit is green, then the color changes from yellow or red when it matures, and finally black when dried. The single stem has 20 to 30 fruit spikes. The seeds occupy the largest area in the fruit.

Where Does Black Pepper Come From?

The origin of Black pepper is the Malabar coast of South India (Kerala) and there are various varieties of pepper species found in Burma and south India.

Almost two thousand years ago, pepper was harvested in the southeast parts of Asian countries like Malaysia, India, and Indonesia. Olden texts of Greek and roman civilizations say that the trade of pepper was from India and the western parts of the world.

Balancing the Doshas

Black pepper has a heat potency that treats the illness related to pitta dosha (Fire, Water) by increasing pitta and Vata dosha by reducing Vata (Air, Ether), and Kapha doshas (Earth, Water). The digestion process, body metabolism, and energy synthesis are related to pitta dosha. Therefore overconsumption of pepper heats up your body and may cause skin rashes, body heat, burning sensations, peptic ulcers, heartburn, and indigestion issues.

But to treat Vata dosha, Pepper is the best choice and that should be added to your diet. Balanced Vata provides warmth and stability to your body. Because, the attributes of Vata are cold, dry, light, and irregular. A person with imbalanced Kapha dosha will suffer from an illness like overweight, sleeplessness during night, asthma, depression, and diabetics. The attributes of Kapha are cold, heavy, and dense, that’s why pepper is preferred by most people.

Ancient ayurvedic text says that Ahara (food) can maintain the health of your body by balancing the doshas and aids the body metabolism, detoxification, circulation, and nerve transmission process better.

Amazing Health Benefits of Black Pepper

Apart from adding flavor to your cuisines, black pepper also provides various health benefits because of its bioactive compounds piperine. The pungent taste of black pepper is due to the presence of this natural alkaloid piperine. Piperine has many health-supporting abilities which are given below.

1. Abundant Antioxidants

Black pepper is rich in piperine which is a powerful antioxidant and is useful in blocking the free radical damage in the body.

Usually, Free radicals are produced by our body while exercising or during the digestion process. But excess free radicals are inconsistent molecules that may cause damages to your cells.

Further, the amount of the free radical in your body gets increased when exposed to pollution, cigarette smoke, and sun. This may lead to severe diseases like cancer and heart-related issues.

2. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Inflammation may be the reason behind various illnesses in the human body such as cancer, asthma, arthritis, etc. And inflammation can be treated with the piperine compound present in the pepper. Scientifically it is tested with animals and provided a better result.

3. Anti-Cancer Properties

In black pepper, mostly all the credits go to the active compound piperine. Piperine has an important role in the prevention of cancer cell formation, and it is double powerful when taken with turmeric. Because piperine found in Black pepper maximizes the absorption of curcumin found in turmeric.

Vitamin C, A, flavonoids, carotenes, and antioxidants present in black pepper eliminate harmful free radicals from the body and thus protect you from cancers. Studies found that piperine improves the effectiveness of docetaxel- chemotherapy medicine used in the treatment of various cancers.

4. Enhance Brain Functionalities

Piperine is the main substance found in black pepper and it is helpful in boosting the function of your brain. It is used to treat memory-related diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The substance piperine reduces the formation of amyloid plaques (accumulated damaged protein fragments) in the brain that is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Piperine relaxes the neurotransmitter of the brain by blocking an enzyme that breaks down serotonin. This regulates emotions and mood. Apart from that, it also decreases the function of melatonin – which plays a major role in circadian rhythms.

Piperine is also important in treating Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson is caused due to the lack of dopamine secretion which influences your mood. Consuming black pepper can cure Parkinson’s disease.

Regular intake of Black pepper also delays the brain aging process and is very helpful for stroke people. It also improves the nerve function in the brain, protects the nerve cells, and decreases premature cell death.

5. Controls Blood Sugar Level

As I have mentioned already, piperine properties present in black pepper have various medicinal properties that help to reduce blood glucose level. Black pepper eliminates the glucose level in the bloodstream same as the insulin hormone does.

Studies proved that black pepper oil will block two enzymes that convert starch into glucose. The product from this conversion process gets absorbed by the blood and makes diabetic symptoms worse. Here, intaking black pepper will delay and reduce glucose absorption. It is recommended to use along with metformin – a diabetes medication. And this will reduce the side effects of metformin.

Black pepper reduces the risk of heart-related issues which is caused by elevated blood cholesterol levels. Like turmeric, black pepper increases the absorption of dietary supplements that decrease bad cholesterol.

Adding pepper regularly to your diet will maintain your arteries clean by removing cholesterol from the walls of them. Therefore, it can reduce atherosclerosis which is caused by the narrowing of blood vessels due to plaque formation. Plaque gets formed due to the accumulation of fats, cholesterol, and calcium.
